AVAs
The Santa Clara Valley wine region is home to two American Viticultural Areas (AVAs):
- Santa Clara Valley AVA: This is the overarching AVA for the region, recognized in 1989. It encompasses the historic wine-producing areas of the valley, stretching across Santa Clara and parts of San Benito counties. Known for its Mediterranean climate and diverse soils, this AVA produces a wide range of varietals, including Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Zinfandel, and Chardonnay.
- Pacheco Pass AVA: Established in 2014, this smaller AVA is located within the Santa Clara Valley AVA, primarily along the Pacheco Pass corridor near Gilroy. It is noted for its unique microclimate, with cooler temperatures influenced by coastal breezes, making it well-suited for growing high-quality red and white varietals.
